    NEW CLASS FOR 2024

With the shortage of ammunition & prices, I have decided to create a new class for 2024 to make it more "economical" to shoot.   The class will call the "Budget" class.   The match will be shot at 50 yards using the factory class target.   Any rifle, except the match rifle, will be permitted.

Scope power will be unlimited.   The major change is that you have to shoot 22 ammunition that costs 10 cents or less per round.   Ammunition allowed will be CCI, Standard Velocity,  Winchester T-22 & Aguila match ammunition.   This ammunition must be purchased from the Match Director on the day of the match.   By doing this, we will be sure the proper ammunition is being used by everyone.

    2024 PHA High-Power Matches

    NRA Approved Match

    All dates are tentative.

    2024 High-Power Dates:
    25 May, 22 June, 27 July,
    24 August, 28 September, 26 October.

    2024 Vintage Match Dates:
    27 January, 24 February, 23 March,
    27 April,
    23 November

PHA will begin its 2024 High Power season with Vintage Military Matches in January, February, March, and April. We will start NRA HP matches in May and run through October. The November match will be our last Vintage match of the year. All matches will be held on the 4th Sat of the month, with our times the same as in the past (set-up begins at 0800- 0815, a safety briefing (MANDATORY) at 0845 or as soon as the set-up is complete, and match scheduled to start at 0900.

    VINTAGE

The Vintage matches will be 30 rounds (possibly increased to 40 occasionally), with two matches held back-to-back each Saturday. Competitors may use the same rifle or change for the second match. As in the past, vintage shooters will have priority over modern shooters, if necessary, due to limited firing positions. It will be the Match Director’s decision to have two relays if there are enough competitors to warrant and time permits. The competitors will be divided as close to equal as possible for relays 1 and 2. All firing will be on the NRA 200-yd (SR) target fired at 200-yds. Equipment, ammo, and positions will follow CMP Vintage Match rules. The rules can be found on the CMP website. Please note that CMP has changed some rules, which can be found on their site as well. If there is a 40-rd course for one of our matches, we may add a different position: sitting or kneeling.

The January/February match will depend on our sometimes strange NC weather and the number of competitors. We want to ask anyone who plans to attend to email the Match Directors in advance, if possible, so that if enough people are attending, we can make it known on the PHA website and send out an email announcement. Our January match will be two courses of 30 rounds each.

    NRA

NRA matches at PHA will be Approved and scheduled as 50-round matches following all NRA HP rules. The match will consist of ten rounds of standing SF, ten rounds of sitting RF, ten rounds of prone RF, and 20 rounds of prone SF. Some of the 2024 matches may be changed to 80 rounds for the match (20 rounds at each position) at the discretion of the Match Directors, but advanced notice will be given. Our October match will be an 80-round match. Information will be available on the PHA website from the NRA Match Bulletin, which will be posted later, pending approval from the NRA. As with CMP match rules, NRA rules governing HP matches may be found on their website.

Any questions or suggestions may be sent to the Match Directors through the PHA website under the HP drop-down menu.

We look forward to a great and fun season for this New Year. Please shoot safely and enjoy our sport.

    Buffalo Match

On the 3rd and 5th Sunday of the month, Buffalo shooters gather at the 200-yard rifle range. The main gate will be opened at 8:00 am. Using rifles of a time around the latter half of the 1800’s, we compete with single shot and lever guns. Any cartridge developed before 1896 will qualify. The usual ones are the .45-70 (and the rest of the .45-) .40-65, .38-55, .32-40, .25-20, and others. Lead bullets only. No gas checks. Single shot or lever guns of the time period or replicas thereof. There are some black powder shooters among us. We enjoy shooting the guns and powder of yesteryear and you will find that some of the rifles are amazingly accurate with BP as are some with smokeless powder.

Our targets are paper and steel, all at 200-yards. We shoot from the bench using “bench sticks” for a rest. The bench sticks are usually one board with an additional two more boards that form and are capable of a scissoring action to adjust to the correct height. The scissor boards are usually 2” X 1”. We fire two strings of 15 rounds each. We then rotate the shooters after each string until all have fired the two relays. There is a $15 fee to shoot in the match.

Categories: Iron sights – targets will be 15” and 12” steel disks. Scope – targets will be 8” steel disks. Both categories will also shoot a 12” paper target.

    Match Day Procedures
    Gate opens at 8:00 am.

Registration begins at 8:45 am with the match starting at 9:00 am. As you arrive, rack your rifles and use an ECI in your rifle. Pipe cleaners will work. Lever actions will have levers open. At this time, the Match Director will have a safety meeting and answer questions. After the meeting, at least three designated shooters will be called to the line with their rifles and equipment. Each shooter will need a spotter/score keeper. The Iron Sight shooter will have a 15” and a 12” disk for their target. The Scope shooter will have an 8” disk for their target. There will be a 12” paper target affixed to the back drop over each steel target. At the direction of the Match Director the shooter will have 5 minutes for sighting-in on steel only. The Match Director will call cease fire. The Match director will instruct all shooters to begin the competition. Each shooter will engage the steel with 10 rounds and the paper bullseye target with 5 rounds. The scoring lines will be the value of each shot. A bonus target of one round may be added. All fired rounds will be fired at each shooters pace. Later, we may put a time limit on each string. After all shots are fired, the Match Director will call Cease Fire and request that all rifles be racked. The range will be called COLD and helpers will paint, paste, or replace targets as needed. We will paint, paste, or replace after each string.

This Range Orientation Tour and Safety Shoot takes about 2.5 hours depending on the size of the group and the questions. The shooting portion is about safety and gun handling, not accuracy. Please do not be nervous about the Safety Shoot. Most new members will leave the tour with their membership card and gate access. We do not need your money until the end of the tour if you didn't pay online.

Please email me directly with any other questions. Thank you.
